How We Sleep at Night with FIVE dogs!

Christmas 2017, Not pictured: Phoebe (this was before we rescued her)

Everyone always asks us if our five dogs sleep in bed with us. Once I confirm that they do in fact sleep with us, the next question is: HOW?

Here is a little insight into our bedtime routine that totally works for us!

The Dogs:

All of our dogs were rescued from various shelters and rescue groups. They each came with a different sad story and from a different place, but now they are a part of our family! These dogs are extremely loved and we feel that sleeping close to each other is a sign that we are a bonded pack!

The Humans:

Sarah and Evan

We married in 2014, but started rescuing while we were dating – Emmy was our first! Many wonder which of us is the “animal crazy” one in the relationship that is responsible for all of these dog adoptions?! Our love for animals is completely equal! It would never work if we weren’t both CRAZY 🙂

The Bed:

King size with an ottoman supplemented next to my side.
This is a blessing for Emmy!

We usually go to bed around 10pm. We give one last treat and let the dogs outside for their final bathroom break.

As soon as we walk to the bedroom, they all run and get into the bed with us and assume their positions! Emmy has arthritis and it’s very difficult for her to get on and off the bed. The ottoman allows her to still sleep with the pack and get on and off easily by herself. She still sleeps in the bed a couple times a week though!

Typically, Auggie makes Evan pick him up to get into the bed because he is ridiculous. He will bark bedside until someone picks him up, even though he is completely capable of jumping up by himself. Obviously we are trained well!

I am sleeping. Evan is not sleeping because: Auggie.

Phoebe uses the ottoman to parkour onto the mattress. It’s probably the cutest part of our bedtime routine because her little legs look like chicken wing drumsticks!

Assigned Spots:

I set up my security camera in the bedroom over three days so I could get a real shot of us at night actually sleeping in the different positions!

Night One
Night Two
Night Three (Evan was out of town)

Do we sleep comfortably? Sometimes. Sometimes not.

At the end of the day, if you let your dog sleep in bed with you, great! If not, that’s fine too! Do what works best for your family. This is what works for us!

I absolutely love bedtime! There’s nothing better to me than snuggling with my dogs and husband while watching TV in bed and then slowly falling asleep. Bonus if it’s raining!
